Reflections of a Roving Doctor · The edge of the world

Part Two

From Argentina and Patagonia to Antarctica and Chile, the journey pushes farther south than planned - into wild landscapes, difficult crossings and the uncomfortable freedom of letting go.

South America & Antarctica · 2023

The road reaches the end of the world.

Part Two begins in Argentina, descends through Patagonia and crosses the Drake Passage to Antarctica before returning north through Argentina and Chile.

Mountains, glaciers, rough seas and vast empty horizons strip the journey back to its essentials. Control becomes an illusion, plans loosen their grip and the wildest chapter of the gap year begins to unfold on its own terms.

What the far south begins to teach

Three ideas carried beyond the edge.

Part Two moves through extremes, but its deepest changes happen internally - in the space between expectation, surrender and perspective.

Surrender

Weather, seas and distance refuse to be controlled. Letting the route unfold becomes less a failure of planning and more a necessary way forward.

Extremes

Patagonia and Antarctica amplify everything: beauty, isolation, fear and awe. The landscape makes ordinary life feel both distant and intensely precious.

Perspective

At the edge of a continent, old worries shrink. Distance reveals which parts of identity were essential and which had merely become familiar.

I don't even know myself at all, I thought I would be happy but now…
The more I try to push it I realize, gonna let go of control…
Gonna let it happen, gonna let it happen…
