The next chapter in emergency medicine

More responsibility.
A different perspective.

Diary of an Emergency Doc follows my four years as a Higher Specialist Trainee in emergency medicine, beginning in 2026.

After Basic Specialist Training comes another beginning: greater responsibility, harder decisions and learning to become someone others can turn to when the department gets difficult. The shifts continue, but the view from inside them is changing.

I’m currently an HST 1, writing as I go. This journal follows the cases that stay with me, the people I learn from and the ongoing effort to grow as a doctor while keeping a life beyond the hospital.

Inside the journal

Growing into the responsibility.

Higher specialist training changes the questions I ask, the decisions I make and the way I see the department. These are the threads I’ll follow along the way.

Judgement

The decisions that become more complex, the uncertainty that remains and the experience that slowly changes how I respond to both.

Stepping up

Learning to lead, supporting the people around me and finding my voice while still knowing when to ask for help.

Life beyond the rota

Protecting time for the sea, travel, relationships and everything else that keeps me grounded when work threatens to fill the whole picture.

One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.- Henry Miller

A journal still taking shape

This one is still being written.

Diary of an Emergency Doc is a work in progress. I’m still living the first of its four years, so the complete journal is not available to buy yet.

While these pages take shape, you can read my other published journals - the stories from medical school, the early years as a doctor and the journeys that brought me here.

I’m still busy living it.
And writing about it.

There are more shifts to work, lessons to learn and pages to fill. While I get on with that, you can return to my previous journals or head outside and explore Malta with me.
