Reflections of a Roving Doctor

One year of border crossings, jungle trails, dive boats, mountain passes, unexpected friendships and uncomfortable truths - written as I stepped away from hospital life and tried to work out who I was without it.

After I left the white coat behind

The road became the next rotation.

This is not a polished travel guide. It is the record of a year in which movement became freedom, escape, education and, eventually, confrontation.

I set off in 2022 after medical training had left me exhausted and unsure of what I wanted next. What began as a backpacking journey soon expanded into a long, chaotic passage through unfamiliar countries, temporary homes and versions of myself I had never met before.

Across three parts, the journal moves between adventure and introspection: ancient ruins, diving, wilderness, romance, loneliness, reckless decisions, difficult goodbyes and the gradual realisation that changing continents does not automatically silence everything you carry with you.

One journey in three movements.

Begin with the decision to leave, cross the world through Parts I, II and III, and finish where movement finally gives way to reflection and return.

Inside the reflections

More than destinations.

The places provide the scenery, but the real story lies in what happens when freedom, loneliness, curiosity and uncertainty are allowed to travel together.

The Road

Border crossings, boats, buses, trails, dives and the addictive uncertainty of waking up without knowing exactly where the day will end.

The Inner Journey

Burnout, identity, intimacy, loneliness and the realisation that distance can create space for reflection without guaranteeing any easy answers.

The Return

Home, medicine, responsibility and the difficult work of building a life that does not require constant escape in order to feel meaningful.

I left to see the world. Somewhere along the way, the road forced me to look back at myself.
