Reflections of a Roving Doctor · Part One · Chapter I.VI

Nicaragua

Two weeks of colonial cities, black-ash volcanoes, jungle nights, crater lagoons, an island rising from Lake Nicaragua and a final run to the Pacific coast. Shared with Amelia after Utila, this chapter becomes as much about learning to move on as it is about moving forward.

Nicaragua · January 2023

Moving on without leaving it behind.

Nicaragua begins with a long border crossing into León, follows the volcanic corridor south through Granada and Ometepe, then finishes beside the Pacific in San Juan del Sur.

After the months spent diving and building a life in Utila, the road feels different. Nostalgia follows every bus and hostel, but shared adventures, eruptive landscapes and the return of constant movement gradually create space for a new chapter.

AFTER

After Nicaragua

Nicaragua marks the difficult transition from the life built in Utila back to the unpredictability of the road - a chapter shaped by companionship, nostalgia, volcanoes, the Pacific coast and the slow rediscovery of momentum.

What Nicaragua becomes

A country between chapters.

The journey moves forward, but Nicaragua proves that leaving a place does not mean leaving behind everything it changed.

Leaving Utila

The first kilometres through Nicaragua are haunted by the home, friendships and routine left behind in Honduras.

01

Fire and water

Volcanic ash, lava, crater lagoons and the freshwater sea of Cocibolca shape nearly every stage of the route.

02

The shared road

Travelling with Amelia changes the rhythm of the journey, replacing solitary freedom with shared chaos, comfort and memory.
