Part I · 2022–2023

Honduras

Honduras · November 2022 - January 2023

The itinerary breaks - and something better begins.

Honduras crosses the Maya heartland at Copán, follows the Caribbean coast through Tela and La Ceiba, then takes a ferry to Utila for what was supposed to be a brief diving stop.

Honduras moves from Copán and the Caribbean coast to Utila for what should have been a brief diving stop. Instead, the road pauses for two months as Underwater Vision becomes home, scuba becomes a vocation and the gap year begins to feel like an entirely different life.

Eleven stages from ruins to reef.

The mainland journey comes first, followed by eight weeks on Utila. Each card keeps its journal entries in chronological order.

I.V.I

Copán Ruinas

Scarlet macaws, natural hot springs and the intricate ruins of Copán bring the journey through the Mundo Maya to a fitting and unexpectedly emotional close.

I.V.II

Tela

The road reaches the Caribbean through botanical gardens, coastal wildlife and a plan for Punta Sal that proves travelling rarely follows the script.

I.V.III

La Ceiba

Pico Bonito, Cayos Cochinos and a chance encounter with another doctor turn a transit city into one of Honduras’s most varied stops.

I.V.IV.I

Utila · Week One

A planned week on Utila begins with Underwater Vision, Advanced Open Water training, wrecks, bioluminescence and the first signs that the itinerary is about to collapse.

I.V.IV.II

Utila · Week Two

The island stops feeling like a destination and starts becoming a routine as diving, staff life and the decision to train as a Divemaster take over.

I.V.IV.III

Utila · Week Three

Training intensifies through rescue scenarios, assisting courses, underwater mishaps and the growing confidence of belonging aboard the dive boat.

I.V.IV.IV

Utila · Week Four

Specialities, technical skills and wreck diving deepen the relationship with the sea while island friendships become harder to imagine leaving behind.

I.V.IV.V

Utila · Week Five

The extraordinary becomes ordinary: early boats, changing guests, long evenings and a life increasingly organised around the reef rather than the road.

I.V.IV.VI

Utila · Week Six

The Divemaster journey reaches its chaotic peak with final challenges, deep dives, dolphins, graduation rituals and the legend of Baby Jesus.

I.V.IV.VII

Utila · Week Seven

Christmas on the island, difficult weather and the approach of departure make every dive, sunset and familiar face feel more precious.

I.V.IV.VIII

Utila · Week Eight

One final sunset, a round of goodbyes and the hardest departure of the trip close two months in a place that had quietly become home.

What Honduras becomes

The place that changes the plan.

Honduras turns movement into belonging and transforms a new hobby into one of the defining passions of the journey.

Reinvention

Ignoring the itinerary for the first time creates space to train, work, experiment and discover a version of life that had never seemed possible.

The Sea

Scuba diving grows from a new hobby into freedom, responsibility and a lasting connection to the half of the world hidden below the surface.

Belonging

A dive shop, a boat, an island routine and an ever-changing community of travellers become the closest thing to home found on the road.
