Filfla
A bomb-scarred islet. A protected offshore reef. One of Malta's most restricted dives.
Filfla is not a single reef feature to tick off. It is an isolated underwater landscape of limestone, boulder slopes, sand and sudden depth - with the entire dive shaped by its remoteness.
Roughly five kilometres off Malta's south-western coast, Filfla rises from deep water as a flat-topped limestone islet. Its name is thought to derive from the Arabic felfel, meaning peppercorn, and older charts called it “Pepper” island - fitting for the tiny dark speck seen from Malta.
Just south-west lies Filflett, or il-Ġebla ta’ Xutu, a much smaller rocky islet marking the southernmost point of the Maltese archipelago. Together they feel like Malta's final fragments before the open Mediterranean.

A nature reserve shaped by decades of bombardment.
Filfla's landscape is inseparable from its military past. Decades as a target range scarred the cliffs and left evidence scattered across the seabed.
Target island
Filfla was used for military target practice by successive forces. Bombing and gunnery exercises intensified during the mid-20th century, physically altering the cliffs and surrounding rocky debris.
The firing stops
Target practice ended in the early 1970s, but the seabed retained the evidence: spent ammunition, unexploded ordnance and a landscape of broken rock beneath the cliffs.
Nature reserve
The Filfla Nature Reserve Act established stronger legal protection for the islet, reflecting its importance for wildlife and the need to minimise human disturbance.
Protection and research
Filfla and its surrounding waters form part of a highly protected marine and terrestrial environment. Authorised scientific dives have helped reveal how significant the area can be for rays, skates and other marine life.

Filfla is best understood as a series of terrain changes rather than one fixed route. The exact profile depends on the side of the island, the authorised drop point and what the current allows on the day.
Collapsed limestone below the cliffs
Large and medium-sized boulders dominate parts of the shallower seabed. These create shelter, ledges and gaps while also making visual navigation surprisingly repetitive - a compass matters.
The transition out from the island
The bottom can begin gently before steepening offshore. This is where depth can creep up quickly if the team focuses more on the scenery than the profile.
Where the wildlife search changes
The boundary between reef and sand is especially worth watching. Rays and skates are easily missed when divers only scan the rock directly in front of them.
The island continues far below the recreational dive
Some sections descend towards 50 metres and beyond, with the broader reef system continuing past 70 metres. The visual drama is real - so is the need to set a hard depth limit before descending.
Conditions decide which Filfla you get
The site is exposed and offshore, with current ranging from weak to strong or variable. The boat is the only practical exit, so drop point, current, pickup and DSMB procedure should be agreed before entry.
At Filfla, the plan starts with permission - then the current.
There is no universal route around Filfla. These profiles show ways to think about an authorised dive, not instructions for independent access.
Boulder-slope circuit
A controlled recreational profile using the broken limestone and sand boundary as the main visual reference.
- Enter from the authorised boat drop and descend as a group rather than allowing the current to separate divers before the reef is reached.
- Establish the reef orientation early and keep a compass heading. Repeated boulder fields can look far more distinctive on the way out than on the way back.
- Follow the slope to the agreed maximum depth, watching the sand margin as carefully as the rocks for rays and skates.
- Begin the return before gas or no-decompression time becomes the limiting factor, using progressively shallower terrain rather than holding one depth.
- Deploy the DSMB as briefed and complete the ascent where the boat can track and recover the team safely.
Drop-off profile
For teams specifically briefed for a steeper section of the reef and comfortable managing depth beside open blue water.
- Confirm the exact side of the island, current direction, maximum depth and pickup strategy with the authorised operator before entering.
- Descend on the reef rather than free-falling into open water, using the wall or slope as the team's visual depth reference.
- Spend the deepest part of the dive early and resist following the terrain simply because it continues down beyond the recreational plan.
- Work progressively shallower while checking ledges and the adjacent sand rather than staying fixed to the wall for the entire dive.
- Leave enough reserve for a free-water ascent and possible surface drift while the boat closes in for pickup.
Wildlife-focused profile
Slow the dive down and treat the reef-sand boundary as habitat rather than scenery.
- Start with the site's normal authorised descent and orientation, then establish a slow search line along the reef-sand transition.
- Scan ahead for silhouettes and movement on the sand before swimming directly over an animal and losing the encounter.
- Alternate between the open substrate and boulder bases, where morays, lobster, scorpionfish and octopus may be easier to miss than expected.
- Keep the group compact. A wildlife dive becomes inefficient very quickly when every diver is searching in a different direction.
- Finish shallow and leave the animals undisturbed - especially in a site whose value depends on reduced human pressure.

Diving Filfla felt like a privilege. I was there with Sharklab-Malta for authorised elasmobranch research through Bombs to Batoids, not an ordinary recreational dive.
Access changes the whole experience
Filfla's restrictions changed the boat ride from the start. Diving there for research felt both privileged and responsible - protected research space first, dive site second.
Broken limestone beneath vertical cliffs
Below the island, large boulders and sloping reef create a stark underwater landscape. The terrain can look repetitive, so reading the slope and keeping orientation matters from the beginning.
Everything seems bigger here
The rays and skates were the research focus, but what surprised me was the size of everything else. Even familiar reef fish seemed huge - the damselfish included.
The seabed still carries the past
Military ordnance scattered across the seabed makes Filfla's history impossible to ignore. It is fascinating to see, but firmly something to observe from a distance.
Filfla's protected waters are especially notable for rays and skates - the focus of the Sharklab-Malta research dives I joined.
I dived Filfla with Sharklab-Malta through Bombs to Batoids, an authorised citizen-science project studying elasmobranchs around the reserve. Across ten survey dives, 164 individual skates and rays were recorded. Read the project report.
Beyond batoids, the reef supports scorpionfish, morays, lobster, octopus, flying gurnards and remarkably large reef fish.
One of Malta's most compelling reefs is also one of the least available.
Filfla is not a dive you simply book. It is a protected research environment requiring special authorisation. Diving it through Sharklab-Malta's elasmobranch work made the privilege more meaningful - not only experiencing the reef, but helping understand what its protection has preserved.
