P29 Patrol Boat

Built to patrol

The P29 feels less like a single wreck feature and more like a journey along an entire ship.

Resting upright on the sand off Ċirkewwa, the P29 is a 52-metre former Kondor I-class minesweeper and patrol vessel. Its long, narrow profile gives the dive a different rhythm from a compact tug, with the stern, superstructure, gun deck and bow unfolding one after another.

The seabed sits at roughly 34 metres, while much of the upper structure is substantially shallower. That allows several profiles: a deeper full-hull circuit, a shallower superstructure tour, or penetration for properly trained wreck divers.

History of the wreck

From the Baltic to the Maltese seabed.

Before becoming a dive site, the P29 had already changed countries, roles and pennant numbers - beginning as an East German minesweeper before ending its working life patrolling Maltese waters.

1969-70

Boltenhagen

Built at Peenewerft in Wolgast, East Germany, the vessel entered service as Boltenhagen, hull number GS09. She was the eighteenth Kondor I-class minesweeper built and also carried out patrol duties along the East-West German border.

1990-96

German Coast Guard

After German reunification, Boltenhagen moved into Federal Coast Guard service as BG31. Her weapons were removed and equipment changed before she was finally decommissioned in 1996.

1997-04

P29

Malta purchased the vessel in 1997 and renamed her P29. She served with the Maritime Squadron of the Armed Forces of Malta, carrying out coastal patrols, border-control work and anti-smuggling operations.

2007

The scuttling

After decommissioning, the ship was cleaned and prepared as a diving attraction. On 14 August 2007 she was deliberately sunk off Ċirkewwa, settling upright on the sandy seabed as an artificial reef.

The P29 rests upright on its keel. The long hull, open superstructure and military deck fittings make orientation unusually intuitive from the outside - once you know which end is which.

01 · Stern

Openings into the machinery spaces

The stern is often the first section reached from shore. Large preparation openings expose the former engine-room area and provide dramatic sight-lines through the hull without requiring entry.

02 · Midships

Bridge, wheelhouse and long corridors

The superstructure breaks up the otherwise long, low profile of the ship. Doorways, windows and internal rooms make this the most complex part of the wreck and the section where good buoyancy matters most.

03 · Bow

The military silhouette

The forward deck and gun position give the P29 its most recognisable profile. Pulling away from the bow reveals the full length of the hull behind it - one of the wreck's classic wide-angle views.

A patrol boat becoming a reef

Nearly two decades underwater have turned the cleaned steel into habitat. Open decks attract schooling fish while shaded recesses shelter ambush predators and invertebrates.

The P29 can be dived as a complete exterior circuit, a shallower upper-structure tour or a trained penetration dive. Depth and gas usually decide more than ambition does.

Approach

The offshore navigation before the wreck itself begins.

150-200 m offshore
  1. Enter from Ċirkewwa and begin the offshore swim using the agreed compass bearing, seasonal buoy and current local briefing.
  2. Use the memorial stone and plaque dedicated to British diver Frank Pembridge as the first underwater navigation landmark.
  3. Continue to the old anchor lying in the seagrass, then maintain the planned bearing towards the wreck.
  4. Expect the upper structure to appear first. Confirm orientation before committing to the deeper part of the route.
The offshore approach is part of the gas plan. Leave enough reserve for the return to the reef and exit rather than treating the wreck as the only significant distance in the dive.
