Moalboal – Day 1: Freedom At Last

MOALBOAL

Day 1: Freedom At Last

October 24, 2024

Chris and I could hardly believe it when the hotel staff told us the coast guard had lifted all restrictions. While I had missed out on two days of diving, at least my itinerary wouldn’t be screwed up. The same can’t be said for Chris, who had come all the way here just to stay locked inside his room.

The ferry ride back to Maya Port was tumultuous, to say the least. I found myself comparing the trip to what the Drake Passage had felt like on the way to Antarctica. I felt green, a few other passengers looked it, and a few more spouted it.

A Long Way to Go

Once at the port, Chris and I bid each other farewell, having bonded so much over our missed opportunities over the previous few days. Luckily, a few other backpackers from Spain happened to be going in my same direction, meaning a private shuttle would be an option. To hell with public transport!

That said, it wasn’t all fun and games either. It took us five hours to get to Cebu City, and then another three hours on a different shuttle that took us all the way to Moalboal – yet another paradise for divers on the southwest coast of Cebu. While planning this trip, I kinda swore to myself I wouldn’t make it all about diving – yet another promise I seemed to be breaking. But hey, what’s better than being underwater?

Stay wild,
Marius
