With Amelia having to work in the morning, I was left to my own devices to wander around the city. That was the plan – until Greg, the Czech guy I had met rafting in Costa Rica, told me he happened to be there too.
After Costa Rica, Greg and I had stayed in touch. We had even met in Malta when he decided to pay me a visit, and we spent a few days going around together. Now, we had the opportunity to roam around Vienna. With me having no plans and him being an art enthusiast, we decided to go to the Albertina Museum.
Housed in a former Habsburg palace, the museum is best known for its vast graphic art collection, including works by masters like Dürer, Michelangelo, Rubens, Klimt and Picasso. The museum also features modern art exhibitions and beautifully restored staterooms that reflect its royal past. Blending imperial elegance with artistic brilliance, the Albertina offers a journey through centuries of European art under one roof.
Going around the museum with someone who truly appreciated art was a breath of fresh air, to say the least!
After that, we met up with Amelia and her flatmate Andreas for lunch at the Donaukanal – the Danube Canal, a former branch of the Danube that cuts through central Vienna.
As Greg went on and on, Amelia and I found ourselves looking at each other the same way we did when the other Andreas (the German guy I had a fling with) arrived in Utila and wouldn’t shut up for a second. In fact, the second he excused himself to the restroom, she told me I seemed to have a pattern.
The way I see it, the more the people I date and hang out with talk, the less I have to – thus giving my poor vocal cords a break every once in a while. It might also have to do with me being attracted to narcissists. Who knows…After that, we met up with Amelia and her flatmate Andreas for lunch at the Donaukanal – the Danube Canal, a former branch of the Danube that cuts through central Vienna.
With me having to leave the following day, I quickly shooed Greg away in an effort to spend as much time as possible with Amelia.
We wandered around the streets a bit more, and then we got back to her place. There, we did the traditional photoshoot – donning our favourite divemaster T-shirts, which we had got back at Underwater Vision, her living room offering somewhat of a contrast to the Caribbean backdrop at the dive shop. Standing there, I wondered if we’d ever be wearing those T-shirts again in a similar setting.
That’s when we came up with the idea of going on a dive trip together. Maybe life wouldn’t allow either of us to go back to Utila any time soon, but we sure as hell could dive elsewhere – if only for a week.
