BELIZE – PEOPLE

BELIZE

PEOPLE

Whilst around 50% are Latino, more than 25% of the population is Creole; descendants of sub-Saharan African slaves who were brought to British Honduras for labour. In addition, Belize is also home to Mayans, East Indians and the Garifuna; people with mixed African and American ancestry who used to live in the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent.

Whilst most people here speak English; the official language given that the country used to be a British colony, the majority are bilingual and also speak Belizean Creole; an English-based form. With half the population being Hispanic, Caribbean Spanish is also one of the most spoken languages here, with most people being multilingual.

Culture-wise, Belize lends itself a huge variety of traditions and customs, especially given the mix of people found here. With all its British, Caribbean and Latin influence, Belize is basically a hodgepodge of everything, making it one of the most interesting countries one could visit.

Hmm… Let’s just say that that whilst most islanders have adapted to a “Go slow” Caribbean attitude, those living on the mainland feature more traditional Latin American lifestyles.
