LAND

Honduras is the second-largest country in Central America. It borders Guatemala to the west, El Salvador to the south-west, Nicaragua to the south-east, the Caribbean Sea to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the south.

The country has four main geographic regions: the northern Caribbean coastal plains and mountains, the southern Pacific lowlands, the central highlands, and the eastern Caribbean lowlands. About 80% of Honduras is mountainous, and the eastern side is blanketed in tropical forests.

Honduras experiences a tropical climate, though it’s more temperate in the highlands. Temperatures and humidity are higher along the Caribbean coast compared to the Pacific. Located in the hurricane belt, the country is prone to tropical storms – and also suffers frequent droughts, both of which have severe impacts on its economy.

Given the large variety of ecosystems, Honduras a biodiversity hotspot – with numerous national parks created to preserve native flora and fauna. The northern coast also forms part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — a haven for marine life.
