EL SALVADOR

PEOPLE

With a population that’s been booming since the 1950’s, El Salvador boasts a population of around 6 million people. The main ethnic group consists of Mestizos, with a substantial amount of white people and a small percentage of indigenous people and other mixed races.

Whilst Spanish is the official language, most people here speak Caliche; a local Spanish vernacular. This dialect, though sharing many similarities with the standard language, has pronounced differences with regards to phonetics, phonology, vocabulary and even verb conjugation.

Salvadorean culture is an interplay revolving around indigenous, Spanish and African traditions, with Catholicism playing an important role. The country’s turbulent history and civil war has inspired many an artform, with most Salvadoreans being as patriotic as they come.

With more than half the population living in the countryside, most people are poor and have no access electricity or running water, with malnutrition being one of the leading causes of death. Whilst education is free, the lack of money for transport and supplies means most are unable to attend school, resulting in a high rate of illiteracy.
