EL SALVADOR – LAND

EL SALVADOR

LAND

El Salvador is the smallest country in Continental America, bordered on the north-west by Guatemala, on the north-east by Honduras and on the south by the Pacific Ocean, being the only country in Central America without contact with the Caribbean.

Found atop three tectonic plates, El Salvador is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, with volcanic activity and earthquakes being frequent, lending it the name of Land of Volcanoes.

The country has a tropical climate with the classic wet and dry seasons, the temperature varying with altitude despite little seasonal changes. Apart from volcanism and seismic activity, the country’s location next to the Pacific Ocean makes it a particular vulnerable target to extreme weather events, with hurricanes and harsh droughts being all too common.

Boasting of mountains, volcanic lakes, rivers, forests and mangroves amongst the many terrestrial ecosystems found here, El Salvador has a rich biodiversity with a large variety of flora and fauna. That said, much of the country’s forests have been cut down for firewood and agricultural purposes, resulting in the destruction of many wildlife habitats.

One of the rarest geological formations in the world is the El Boquerón Crater on top of San Salvador Volcano – it contains a smaller crater inside it nicknamed “El Boqueroncito” (Little Boquerón), forming a crater within a crater.
