GUATEMALA

PEOPLE

Guatemala is the most populous country in all of Central America, with a population of around 17.6 million, despite a large number of diaspora all over the world.

The majority of the populations consists of Ladino people; a mix of Mestizos and Hispanic people, with some 41% being Mayans of which the K’iche’ and Q’eqchi and Kaqchikel are the most numerous.

The primary language spoken in this country is Spanish, which is spoken by more than 90% of the population. Apart from Spanish, twenty-one Mayan languages are still in use to this day, with other minor indigenous groups like the Garifuna people having languages of their own.

Much of Guatemala’s culture still revolves around indigenous customs, especially when it comes to cuisine and traditional clothes, with many women still weaving the colourful traje of their ancestors. With the Mayan communities still alive and thriving, it is here that one can truly appreciate the people’s culture.

The daily routines in Guatemala differ based on both the geographical location and the economic circumstances of its inhabitants. Urban dwellers commonly engage in office work, retail, or market activities, whereas rural communities often revolve around agricultural practices.
