GUATEMALA – LAND

GUATEMALA

LAND

Guatemala is bordered by Mexico on the north and west, by Belize and the Caribbean on the north-east, by Honduras on the east, by El Salvador on the south-east, and, finally, by the Pacific on the south.

The country is divided into three major regions by two mountain ranges crossing the country from west to east, giving rise to the northern lowlands of Petén, the highlands over the mountains and the Pacific coast to the south.

Given that the three regions vary in elevation and landscape, all of them feature different climates, with the north and south being hot and humid and the highland peaks being cold and dry. Much like Belize, being in the middle of the Caribbean and the Pacific makes Guatemala the perfect hotspot for hurricanes, with the presence of various geological faults giving rise to seismic activity and even volcanism – with 37 volcanoes being found here.

Guatemala boasts of fourteen ecoregions, with one third of the country being covered in forest, making it the fifth most biodiverse country in the world.

Lake Atitlán, a lake in the highlands that is renowned for its beauty, is also the deepest lake in all of Central America.
