Belize is a rhombus-shaped country that’s around 23,000 kilometres squared in size. Found on the north-eastern coast of Central America, the country is bordered by Mexico on the north, Guatemala on the west and south, and the Caribbean Sea on the east.

The north is mostly flat and is dominated by forests, swampy areas and coastal plains, with the Maya Mountains found in the south.

Belize has a tropical climate with wet and dry seasons and temperatures varying with altitude and vicinity to the coast. Here, hurricanes tend to play a major environmental role, not to mention an economic one.

The country boasts of incredible biodiversity, both terrestrial and aquatic. Apart from housing tapirs (the country’s very own national animal), the country boasts of the Belize Barrier Reef. This makes up some one third of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef; the second largest coral reef in the world. 

No wonder people from all over the world flock here, with treks and hikes in the forests and diving and snorkeling being the best way to appreciate everything the country has to offer.

The Great Blue Hole,  a huge marine sinkhole off the coast of Belize, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that draws in millions of tourists every year. This (unofficial) wonder of the world formed during the quaternary glaciation period.
